The first of two Taito arcade licences due to be released by Fire bird Gold is the immensely popular Bubble Bobble, with Flying Shark due to follow in November. All conversions were produced by Soft­ware Creations, the programming team responsible for moving The Sentinel on to the Spectrum. The bubble-blowing Brontosaurus mentioned in the blurb are on a mission to battle through 100 screens and free their female friends from the clutches of the evil Baron Von Bonner. Up to seven creatures may lurk on a screen and Von Bonner is guarded by six dif­ferent types of bully-minion- Benzo, Bonnie-bo, Boa-Boa, Blubba, Boris and Bonner.

Bub and Bob can both jump and blow bubbles. Enclosing a bully in a bubble renders it helpless, and bursting the bubble disposes of the bully, sending it flying across the screen to turn into fruit as it lands on a ledge. Chomping fruit earns bonus points, and extra points if more than one bubble-clad bully is burst at the same time.

HURRY MODE

Clearing all the bullies very rapidly causes extra goodies to appear on the next screen – and they confer high bonuses. Take too long to finish a screen, however, and you’re told to ‘Hurry Up’. The music then speeds up just to add to the tension. Ignoring the speed warning causes Baron Von Blubba to make an appearance – along with his brother if a two player game is in progress. The Baron and his brother follow the Brontosaurus around the screen trying to kill them until either the last bully is destroyed or the Brontosaurus are killed.

Platform arrangements on later screens become increasingly difficult to negotiate, and in many instances it seems impossible to complete a level. However, there are many tricks to be learned, such as bouncing on bubbles as they rise.

BIG BULLY

On the last screen Bub and Bob meet the Baron – the biggest bully of them all, and also the most difficult to destroy.

Bubble Bobble is highly original, extremely addictive and great fun. Be suited businessmen have been known to relieve the day’s tension by playing for hours on end, notch­ing up impressive high scores in the process but the extent of its success in the arcades is a mys­tery – its apparent simplicity could so easily have meant it being over­looked.
